| A Tale of Mystery and Science Fiction set in the Old West Written by Rudy C. Granados This illustrated short story unfolds in the last days of what is known as the Navajo Campaign, led by Kit Carson in 1863 and 1864 and takes place at Fort Wingate near Gallup, New Mexico. These historical events serve as a backdrop for the two fictional characters in the story. They encounter each other while the Navajo are being detained at the fort. The defeated Native Americans are about to leave for the newly built reservation at Bosque Redondo, near Fort Sumner, NM. Now known as the "Long Walk", this march caused hundreds of Navajo to die on the journey, and then the survivors only later suffered intolerable hardships on an ill-conceived government reservation. |
